The Dominican Republic occupies approx. two-thirds of the eastern part of the island of Hispaniola, sharing the island with the Republic of Haiti.
The DR is the second largest nation in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean region by area (after Cuba) at 48,671 square kilometers and third by population with approximately 11.2 million people, of whom approximately 3.3 million live in the metropolitan area of Santo Domingo, the capital city. The official language of the country is Spanish, and the country is divided into 32 provinces, including the National District.
The Dominican Republic is one of the most visited destinations in the Caribbean making tourism its largest industry. Other industries found in the DR are sugar cane, cacao (for chocolate), coffee, and rice. It is also the only home in the world to a semi-precious stone called “larimar”, home to the world’s second largest gold mine, and home to both the tallest peak and the largest lake and point of lowest elevation in the Caribbean.
